The area around Umingmaktok – formerly Bay Chimo - is home to a spectacular variety of wildlife including caribou, muskox, wolves, seals, and grizzly bears. The Queen Maud Gulf Migratory Bird Sanctuary to the east is the largest in Canada and provides important nesting habitat to numerous species of migratory birds.
Umingmaktok, meaning place of many muskox, is a small traditional community that utilizes the surrounding sea and tundra for food and clothing and is known for its excellent hunting guides.
